It’s been a while since I’ve done a post in the Home category, so I thought I’d cover the main principle I use when deciding what to buy for our house.
Our business has been doing really well recently, and with summer not that far away, I decided it was time of us to replace a couple of old things that were looking a bit tired, specifically a new hoover, a new fridge, and a new lawnmower.
If you know me, you’ll know that I’m absolutely obsessed with the motto “buy cheap, buy twice.” This has been a mantra of mine ever since I took up photography as a hobby, because there are so many knock-offs and cheap versions of things that just don’t cut the mustard. I wasted a few hundred £££ on cheap things to avoid paying the big price tags, but honestly it was never worth it. Not even once.
So now I hold out and save up to buy a great version of what I need, whether it’s a vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower. And I don’t buy very often. In fact, many of my appliances and gadgets (excluding tech), were bought when we first moved into our house over ten years ago now. The ones we invested a bit more money in are still going strong and – touch wood – have had no problems.
The problematic gadgets have been the ones we bought cheap randomly, such as our tiny vacuum that has the worst suction ever and continually gets blocked. We bought it because we needed a cheap replacement desperately, soon after we started our business, and the fact that it’s struggling after only a year tells you all you need to know, really!
I’d much rather wait, save up, and get something that’s better quality that will last for years and do a better job to boot. With all the recent news lately about how buying things, especially “fast” things that are lower quality, can be just as bad for the environment as airmiles, it’s important to me that I don’t have to continually re-buy things. So once we’ve replaced our vacuum cleaner, fridge, and lawnmower, I’ll be happy with all the different appliances and household gadgets we have. As crazy as it might sound, I’m actually looking forward to finalising our choices and buying some great new things that will save us time, money, and hassle in the long run.
What’s your policy when it comes to buying new things? Are you a “the more the merrier” person or a “buy cheap, buy twice” person like me? Would love to hear your approach in the comments!
