Way back on Black Friday, we finally bought me a new laptop.
My old MacBook Pro was from 2011, and although it was still doing great considering, it was definitely time for an upgrade. Even though laptops are now a business expense for us, and I desperately needed an upgrade to be more efficient, I still felt guilty about spending so much money.
Which in a way is kind of crazy, because Joe has spent way more than I have on laptops in the last seven years; he averages one Windows machine around every 6-10 months, and it doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s a cheap one or an expensive one, it still dies within that time.
I guess it’s because it’s a lot of money all at once, and as I completely overhauled my attitude to spending when I became self-employed, every purchase is a big deal now, no matter whether it’s cat litter or a MacBook Pro. And it was only last summer that we were sending Joe’s laptop off in a cat food box to be repaired (they took pity on us and returned it in a regular laptop box!). In many ways, it’s incredible to go from that point to be fine buying a MacBook Pro outright in just six months. I’m extremely grateful that something I can love and appreciate on a personal level (even though I don’t have time to use it on a personal level!) can also be a business expense.

It’s a lot bigger and heavier than I expected it to be, because I upgraded from a 13″ to a 15″. I’m also using a lot more of the 32GB RAM than I anticipated in everyday use (25 GB). I think I’ve heard the fan kick in maybe once though, it doesn’t get anywhere near as hot as my old laptop, and using it generally is a dream. I’m wondering if it will last me another seven years at the rate tech is moving – I hope so, because even though switching to a new laptop is easier than it used to be in the old days, it’s still too much hassle for me to not put it off. What with Sin, and being so busy with the business, and messing up the original move over of my files (don’t ask, it’s a long and boring story), I only just got around to using it this month. So crazy.
I even like the touch bar, despite reading so many reviews where people hate it; it’s such a space saver and makes simple tasks so much more efficient without needing a million extra keys. I’m also in love with the fingerprint password protection, because passwords are an absolute pet hate of mine (don’t even get me started on password managers), so now I want everything to be fingerprint accessible! It’s amazing!
Now all I have to do is learn InDesign so I can stop creating PDFs in Publisher!!
