Our plans for celebrating New Year were non-existent. After the rush of my birthday, Sin passing away, Christmas, and a busy month in the business, we were just planning to have a quiet night in.<\/p>\n
But on New Year’s Eve, we had messages from various friends asking what our plans were, so we figured we may as well invite them over and have an impromptu mini party.<\/p>\n
It actually worked out really well, because I didn’t have the stress of planning something; all we needed to do was organize some snacks and give the house a quick vacuum (oh, and tidy up the spare room for people staying over). Everyone was perfectly happy doing their own thing, watching the fireworks at midnight, playing games, just chilling on the sofa with their phone or laptop…whatever they felt like doing. It was a geek night in with no pressure, just a bunch of old friends.<\/p>\n
Historically New Year is my most dreaded holiday, because all my memories of it growing up were being at home on my own watching other people on TV and hearing from friends at massive family parties what a great time they had (my family was not into celebrating new year at all in any way). So realistically my expectations are very low, and the advantage of that is that it’s actually very difficult for new year to be even worse than I’m expecting in any given year. I know a lot of people are very worried about politics and the economy when it comes to the new year, but recently I’ve been living more in the present and short-term (planning sensibly for the future but not laying down any specific expectations about what it might contain), so for me that side of things is more of a “well, let’s see what happens when it happens, and then we can decide if we need to change anything in our own lives.”<\/p>\n
It was a great start to the year, and in the end much better than just being us two on our own – I went to bed exhausted but happy. I’m finding more that last minute plans often work out just as well or even better sometimes, especially as we get older and the business needs increasing amounts of attention as it grows. Once we get to the stage where we can hire full-time employees instead of just part-time, I’m hoping it’ll be easier (although that depends on being able to drag Joe away from tickets!).<\/p>\n
New year is often time for reflection, and this time around we’ve been reflecting on how much our little company has grown in the past year, and how far we’ve come. We’ve been very lucky in many ways over the past year, despite there being sad elements to it as well. Hopefully our business luck continues for a long time yet!<\/p>\n
